Welcome to Counseling and Guidance!

Dear Parents,

I would like to inform you about a very important program at St. Elmo Elementary that provides service to your child and your family. By helping to remove barriers, the Guidance and Counseling Program at St. Elmo Elementary works to insure that your child has the most successful school year possible. Some of the services offered by the school counselor are classroom guidance, large group guidance, small group counseling, individual counseling, parent and staff consultation, and referrals to community agencies. The school counselor is trained to address the normal developmental problems of childhood and to recognize more serious issues that call for referral.

An important goal of the Guidance Department is to help your child develop positive character traits that will help them become successful learners and productive citizens. A strong emphasis is placed on the Six Pillars of Character, universal traits recognized by the Josephson Institute of Ethics. These six traits, trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship, is the framework around which guidance lessons are developed for your children. To learn more about the Six Pillars of Character and the Josephson Institute, go to http://www.charactercounts.org/. Other topics addressed by the counselor are the Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Happy Kids.

Two incentives sponsored by the Counseling and Guidance Department are the Leader of the Month and the Southwest Mobile County Chamber of Commerce Star Student of the Month. Both incentives recognize students demonstrating good character and strong leadership qualities. Students recognized by their teacher as the Leader of the Month will be eligible to be chosen as the Star Student of the Month to represent St. Elmo at the Chamber’s Monthly Business Luncheon. The Star Student of the Month will attend a catered luncheon and receive an award and gift card. Their picture will also be placed on the school’s DMS board and the chamber’s monthly newsletter.

If you have a question, or believe that the counselor could be of service to your family, please do not hesitate to call for an appointment (957-6314), send an email (dlewis4@mcpss.com) or stop by the school. I hope to meet each of you soon.

Educationally Yours,

Mrs. Dilanie Lewis, School Counselor .5
